What to Check Before You Spend Money on Paid Ads
Paid ads can bring visitors to a business within hours. But ads don't fix a weak offer, a confusing page or a broken form. They simply send more people to whatever is already there. If that isn't ready, the budget is spent and little comes back.
Here's what small and medium businesses should check before spending on ads, in any market.
1. Is the offer clear?
Can you explain what you're advertising in one sentence? The best ads promote one product or one service, with a clear price or a clear next step. If you can't say it simply, the ad won't either.
Make sure every fact in the ad, including price, delivery and payment options, is true and matches your website.
2. Does the landing page match the ad?
The page people land on should continue the ad's message. If the ad shows a product, the page should show that product straight away, with the same price and a clear button to buy or enquire. Sending people to a general homepage where they have to search is one of the most common reasons ads waste money.
Check the page on a phone, because most ad clicks happen on mobile. It should load quickly, read easily and have a button you can tap with a thumb.
3. Does lead capture or checkout work?
Fill in the form or go through checkout yourself. Then check:
- Does the submission arrive where someone will see it?
- Does the visitor get a confirmation?
- Is the order or lead saved in one central record?
- Is someone ready to reply or process it quickly?
An ad that brings ten enquiries is worthless if they sit unanswered.
4. Is tracking set up?
Without tracking, you can't tell which ads work. Before launch, make sure the advertising platform can see the key actions on your site, such as page views, product views, the start of checkout or form, and completed orders or leads. Test it with a visit of your own.
Tracking also helps the platform learn who is likely to respond, which matters when you're optimising for sales or leads rather than clicks.
5. Are your policies and claims in order?
Advertising platforms review ads and landing pages. Before submitting:
- Have clear shipping, returns, privacy and contact pages
- Avoid claims you can't prove, such as guarantees, "best" or "number one"
- Avoid sensitive wording, such as health promises, that breaks advertising rules
- Make sure images and text in the ad represent the real product
This reduces the chance of rejection and protects your reputation.
6. Is there a budget and test plan?
Decide in advance:
- The daily budget you're comfortable spending
- How long the test will run, often a week or more, so results aren't judged too early
- What success looks like, such as a cost per order or per lead you can afford
- What you'll change if results fall short: the audience, the creative or the offer
Start small with one campaign and one clear goal, then build on what works.
7. Who approves and who monitors?
Spending money should always need a person's approval. Decide who approves the campaign, who checks it daily during the first week and who decides whether to continue. Routine monitoring and reporting can be handled by an agent team working to written rules, but the decisions on budget stay with you.

- Landing page that matches the ad and works on mobile
- Form or checkout tested end to end
