How Do You Make Your Store Tracking-Ready Before You Run Ads?
Short answer: a tracking-ready store records a visit on every page, fires one clear "order placed" signal on the order confirmation page, and keeps campaign details on every ad link. Before any ads run, place a test order and confirm it shows up once, with the right value and source. Without this, ad results are guesswork.
What does "tracking-ready" mean for an online store?
It means you can see visits, add-to-carts and orders, and where each one came from.
If you can't tell which visits turned into orders, you can't tell whether an ad is worth the money. You might see plenty of clicks and still have no idea whether any of them bought anything. Getting tracking right before you spend is what turns ad results from a guess into something you can act on.
Which pages need measurement?
All of them, with extra attention on the key steps a buyer takes:
- Every page, so you can see where visitors arrive and how they move around.
- Product pages, so you know which products people look at.
- The cart, so you can see when someone adds an item.
- Checkout, so you can see when someone starts to buy.
- The order confirmation page, so you can count finished orders.
Why does the order confirmation page matter most?
It's the one place where a finished order can be counted for certain.
Set up a single "order placed" signal on this page, including the order value. Then make sure it counts once per order. A common problem is the signal firing again every time the customer refreshes the page or comes back to it, which makes your results look better than they are.
What are tagged campaign links and why use them?
Tagged campaign links are ordinary links with a few short labels added to the end, such as where the visitor came from and which campaign they clicked. These labels are often called UTM tags.
When someone clicks a tagged link, the labels travel with them to your site, so your reports can show which ad, post or email sent the visitor. Agree on one simple naming scheme and use it on every link, so results from different channels can be compared.
How do cash-on-delivery or WhatsApp orders get counted?
Count them as their own actions. For a cash-on-delivery order, the order placed on your site can still fire the "order placed" signal, even though payment comes later. For WhatsApp, you can count a click on the WhatsApp button as an action.
Be honest about the limits. Whether a cash-on-delivery order is actually accepted, or a WhatsApp chat turns into a sale, happens outside the website and needs to be tracked separately.
How do you test it before the ads start?
Use this checklist before ads go live:
- Open a tagged link as if you'd clicked the ad.
- Browse a product, add it to the cart and check out.
- Place a test order and reach the confirmation page.
- Check your reports. The order should appear once, with the right value and the right source.
- Refresh the confirmation page and confirm the order isn't counted again.
- Cancel or refund the test order so it doesn't affect your stock or figures.
If you're also setting up the checkout itself, see what a small online store's checkout should ask for.
What about privacy and consent?
Tell visitors what you measure. Your privacy policy should explain, in plain words, what is tracked and why. Follow the rules that apply where your customers are, and ask for consent where it's required. If you're unsure what applies to you, get proper advice.
Be aware too that browsers and privacy settings block some tracking, so no setup will catch every single event. The aim is consistent, tested tracking, not perfect numbers.

Frequently asked questions
Can I add tracking after the ads start?
You can, but anything that happened before it was set up is lost. Set it up and test it first.
Will tracking slow my store down?
Too many scripts can. Keep only the tracking you actually use, and check the store's speed on a phone after setup.
Can you set up the tracking and the ads account for me?
Yes. Our ad tracking setup installs and tests the pixel, conversion events and a UTM naming scheme, confirmed with a test order or lead. Google Ads account, verification and conversion tracking setup is ready to deliver. See Google Ads setup for what it includes.
