Should Your Ads Send People to Your Home Page or a Landing Page?

October 26, 20264 min read

Short answer: for most ads, send people to a landing page built for that ad, not your home page. A home page serves every visitor; a landing page repeats the ad's promise, shows one offer and asks for one action, such as an enquiry or a WhatsApp message. Build and test that page before any ad goes live.

What is the difference between a home page and a landing page?

A home page talks to everyone; a landing page talks to one group about one thing.

Your home page has to welcome first-time visitors, returning customers, job seekers and suppliers. It links to every service, your story, your blog and your contact page. That's exactly what a home page should do.

A landing page is narrower. It's built for one audience, one offer and one action. Someone who clicked an ad for a specific product or service lands on a page about exactly that, with one clear way to take the next step.

When is the home page good enough for ad clicks?

Sometimes the home page works fine, and it's worth being honest about when:

  • Ads for your business name. Someone searching for you by name usually wants your main site.
  • A business with a single service. If your home page already focuses on one offer and has a clear call to action, it may effectively be a landing page already.

For most other ads, especially ones promoting a particular product, service or offer, a dedicated page usually does a better job.

What should an ad landing page show above the fold?

The top of the page, before anyone scrolls, should answer "am I in the right place?" straight away:

  • A headline that matches the ad's wording. If the ad promised something, the headline should say the same thing.
  • Who it's for. One line that tells the right visitor this page is about their situation.
  • One clear action. An enquiry form, a call button or a WhatsApp button, labelled with what happens next.
  • A trust signal you can prove. Real reviews, real client work or genuine details about your business. Leave out anything you can't back up.

Why does the page need to say what the ad said?

Because the visitor clicked for a reason. This is often called message match: the words, offer and look of the page match the ad that brought the visitor there.

If someone clicks an ad about one thing and lands on a page about something else, or a general page where they have to search for it, many will simply leave. When the page picks up exactly where the ad left off, the visitor can carry on without having to think.

Should a landing page keep the main menu?

Usually, fewer exits are better. A full menu invites visitors to wander away from the one action you want them to take.

That doesn't mean trapping people. Keep a simple way to reach your contact details and policies, such as privacy and returns, so the page still feels trustworthy. Just avoid filling it with links to everything else on your site.

What should happen after someone enquires?

The page has done its job only when the enquiry reaches a person who can reply:

How do you check the page is ready before the ads start?

Run through this list before any ad goes live:

  1. Open it on a phone. It should load quickly and be easy to read and tap.
  2. Submit the form yourself. Check that the enquiry arrives where it should.
  3. Click the WhatsApp or call button. Make sure it opens the right number.
  4. Read the headline next to the ad. Do they say the same thing?
  5. One page per offer. If you're advertising two different offers, give each its own page.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a separate landing page for every ad?

No. Build one page per offer or audience, not per ad. Several ads making the same promise can share the same page.

Can a landing page also rank in search?

It can, but its main job is turning ad visitors into enquiries or orders. Keep it open to search engines only if it has real, useful content.

Can you help with the ads as well as the page?

Yes. We manage Facebook and Instagram ads, starting with an audit of the account, tracking and landing page, then a capped test, daily checks, and every launch, budget change or pause made only with your approval. We don't promise returns or quote client results.
